Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course provides an overview of the methods required to evaluate the effectiveness of public health intervention or prevention programs and policies. The course introduces a range of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research designs, and the process for applying and tailoring these designs to program and policy evaluations. In addition, we will focus on the process of engaging communities and stakeholders in program evaluation efforts. The course is intended for graduate students in public health; however, it may be of interest to students in social work, nursing, education, criminal justice, psychology, and other related fields. Recommend enrollment after PUBH 60600; permission of instructor required.
Learning Outcomes1Create an evaluation design that considers the budget, time, data, and environmental constraints of the context to public health interventions.
2Discuss the role of formative, process, outcome, and cost evaluation across the program lifecycle.
3Interpret and critique the quality of evaluation research case studies and reports.
4Explain and defend evaluation design decisions to expert and lay audiences.
5Recognize and critically reflect upon one's own cultural biases and their impact of evaluation design development and implementation.
