The study of the distribution of diseases in human populations and factors that influence these distributions.

Learning Outcomes

1Interpret results of statistical analyses found in public health studies.

2Develop written and oral presentations based on statistical analyses for both public health professionals and educated lay audiences.

3Identify key sources of data for epidemiological purposes.

4Identify the principles and limitations of public health screening programs.

5Describe a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, place, and time.

6Explain the importance of epidemiology for informing scientific, ethical, economic, and political discussions of health issues.

7Comprehend basic, ethical, and legal principles pertaining to the collection, use, and dissemination of epidemiological data.

8Apply the basic terminology and definitions of epidemiology.

9Calculate basic epidemiology measures.

10Communicate epidemiologic information to lay and professional audiences.

11Draw appropriate inferences from epidemiologic data.
