This course serves as an introduction to the field of public health. Topics include identification of the principal determinants of health and how they affect individuals and populations, the role of government and public health professionals in health and healthcare, and critical and emerging issues in public health in the US and around the world.

Learning Outcomes

1Acquire a basic understanding of the field of Public Health.

2Identify the principal determinants of health.

3Explain the role of public health in society.

4Understand the government's role in matters pertaining to the health of the public.

5Understand the role of health disparities in public health.

6Achieve a basic understanding of the major investigative tool in public health: Epidemiology.

7Identify the principal environmental determinants of health.

8Know major and widespread challenges to good health: smoking, obesity, chronic disease, violence, and social and economic inequities.

9Recognize critical and emerging issues in global health, including the current pandemic.
