Fall 2025 Lecture Credit By ExaminationLower DivisionA study of Renaissance and Baroque contrapuntal practices that will include writing two-part compositions in each style. The course will also cover music theory in the early Romantic era concentrating on composers such as Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms.
Learning Outcomes1Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of Renaissance (16th century) counterpoint, Baroque (18th century) counterpoint, and Romantic Era (19th century) harmonic practice.
2Analyze the structural elements of music from the 16th through 19th centuries.
3Produce original two-part and piano compositions in the Renaissance, Baroque, and Romanic Era styles.
