This course is an introduction to the development of beginning jazz improvisational and theoretical skills for all instrumentalists and vocalists. Fundamentals theoretical and musicianship skills are addressed through practical application, guided listening, dictation, transcription, harmonic and rhythmic analysis, and performance of standard jazz repertoire.

Learning Outcomes

1Explain the fundamentals of jazz theory and musicianship.

2Write or transcribe a jazz solo from a recording.

3Explain and notate jazz harmonies and voicings using established forms of analysis.

4Describe various jazz styles in performance.

5Perform selected jazz repertoire.

6Perform an improvised jazz solo.
