Fall 2025 Lecture Credit By ExaminationDepartmental CreditMilitaryUpper DivisionIn this course, students learn detailed ship design, hydrodynamic forces, stability, propulsion, electrical theory and distribution, hydraulic theory and ship control, and damage control. The course includes basic concepts of theory/design of steam, gas turbine, diesel, and nuclear propulsion.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the first and second laws of thermodynamics and how they apply to naval ship systems.
2Understand the difference between thermal and mechanical energy and how to transfer between the two to produce propulsion.
3Explain how energy is stored onboard US naval vessels and the ways that stored energy is converted into propulsion.
4Describe each step of a thermodynamic cycle and be able to apply them to various heat engines.
5Draw the steam cycle on a temperature/entropy graph and describe each process.
6Describe the role of various auxiliary equipment in a propulsion plant.
7Describe the basic damage control process and the initial ship-wide response to fire and flooding.
