Fall 2024 LectureTheoretical and experimental fundamentals of the interactions between molecules and electromagnetic waves. Topics include electronic, vibrational, and rotational spectroscopies, and laser-based methods. Prerequisites: CHM 67100.
Learning Outcomes1Possess a firm working knowledge of the interactions of light with molecules and be able to explain molecular spectroscopy concepts to other scientists.
2Able to analyze molecular rotational, vibrational, and electronic spectra, extracting information about the shapes, bond distances, vibrational motions/frequencies, and electronic excited states from the spectra.
3Able to read and understand key aspects of the current literature in molecular spectroscopy, including advanced, laser-based methods.
4Able to use group theory to identify the point group of a molecule and assign molecular rotational, vibrational, and electronic states to symmetry species.
