This survey crosses the divide between the silent film era and the "talkies" to explore narrative, experimental, and documentary styles of feature films from the 1890s to 1950.

Learning Outcomes

1Demonstrate knowledge of a range of topics and conventions related to film from its origins through the mid-twentieth century.

2Discuss those topics and conventions in relation to their diverse historical, cultural, and aesthetic contexts.

3Produce well-reasoned written arguments about pre-1950 films based on appropriate use of evidence.
