Fall 2025 Lecture Distance Learning Upper DivisionA developmentally organized course to provide knowledge and experience to care for acute episodic illnesses of children and adolescents in primary healthcare settings. Examines pathophysiological alterations and clinical management. Students will synthesize knowledge of developmental, physiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors in the assessment and management of acute illness. The focus is on differential diagnosis, clinical management, and child and family education within the context of primary care. Health promotion models, and biopsychosocial, developmental, and cultural theories are integrated throughout the course. Individual, family, and group intervention strategies are addressed.
Learning Outcomes1Incorporate knowledge of developmental, epidemiological, physiologic, informatics, technology, leadership, policy, systems, quality improvement, family, community, and health promotion theories into the primary care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with acute conditions.
2Examine commonly occurring acute physical and mental health problems in infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
3Identify primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for infants, children, adolescents and young adults with acute health care problems.
4Analyze acute health problem problems in infants, children, adolescents, and young adults to promote health, function, quality of life, and reduced morbidity.
5Identify ethic, cultural, policy and socioeconomic issues in infants, children, adolescents, young adults and families in the implementation of culturally sensitive healthcare.
6Integrate evidence-based practice standards in the care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with acute conditions.
7Analyze acute conditions commonly found in diverse pediatric populations.
8Apply legal, ethical, and professional nursing standards of care in the pediatric population.
9Identify resources to assist in the provision of care in diverse settings.
