Fall 2026 Lecture Distance Learning Lower DivisionBehavioral/Social SciencesThis course introduces students to key concepts in major areas of linguistics, such as phonetics, phonolgy, morphology, syntax, and semantics, which provide a foundation for describing language impairments in a range of populations. This course also aims to demonstrate how findings in the field of linguistics relate to real-life issues, such as language acquisition, intercultural communication, and brain injury.
Learning Outcomes1Identify key concepts in each of the covered subfields of linguistics.
2Analyze word structure and describe most common word-formation processes.
3Classify speech sounds according to their place and manner of articulation and read basic phonetic transcription.
4Describe phrasal categories and how they combine to form hierarchical structures within sentences.
5Identify semantic relationships between words and types of literal and non-literal expressions.
6Recognize the inherent worth and complexity of all human languages - spoken and signed- and the relationship between words and types of literal and non-literal expressions.
