Fall 2025 Lecture Distance Learning Lower DivisionScienceAn introduction to human interaction with the landscape with emphasis on the science of ecology and the technological advancements that form the response to contemporary social and environmental issues. Specific topics include: shifting cultural views of nature, climate change, land development patterns, green infrastructure and building technologies, and the role of design in shaping responses.
Learning Outcomes1Describe social and cultural views of nature and land leading to the shape of American settlement patterns, cities, rural areas, and suburbs.
2Define the four ecological systems and describe the interrelationship of their components.

5Evaluate the impact of climate change on U.S. landscapes and describe the design response to these present and future changes.
6Describe the impact of technological changes in measuring and recording land on the cultural understanding of natural and built systems.
7Apply the understanding of complex interrelationships of ecological sciences to make judgements on the potential of green infrastructure technologies to make beneficial changes.
