Fall 2025 Lecture Credit By ExaminationDepartmental CreditLower DivisionAn introduction to federal regulatory systems and associated publications. Includes aircraft nomenclature, theory of flight, and fundamentals of the aviation industry. Introduces weight and balance procedures. Permission of department required.
Learning Outcomes1Able to correctly identify the major components of an aircraft, know the proper names of these components, and be able to explain the fundamentals of why aircraft are configured as they are.
2Able to accurately calculate the lift and drag of an airfoil, and be able to explain the effects of atmospheric conditions on the airfoil.
3Explain the characteristics of subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flight, be able to identify the associated shock waves, and be able to describe the characteristics and effects of these shock waves.
4Define the basic types of helicopter rotor systems, explain how movements of helicopters are controlled, and be able to explain helicopter rotor aerodynamics.
5Define the proper conditions for weighing an aircraft, understand the proper technical documents needed and be able to calculate an aircraft's weight and balance.
6Demonstrate the ability to analyze and distill, in writing, information in a dynamic environment.
