Spring 2026 Lecture Distance Learning Upper DivisionA basic course in statistical theory covering standard statistical methods and their application. Estimation including unbiased, maximum likelihood and moment estimation; testing hypotheses for standard distributions and contingency tables; confidence intervals and regions; introduction to nonparametric tests and linear regression.
Learning Outcomes1Understand the basic asymptotic theory including consistency and convergence in distribution.
2Know how to perform some elementary statistical inference such as estimation, confidence interval and hypothesis testing.
3Be familiar with the maximum likelihood method to make statistical inference.
4Know how to judge the quality of different estimators.
5Know how to perform optimal tests of hypotheses.
