Spring 2026 Laboratory Distance Learning Laboratory Preparation Lower DivisionThis course introduces aerospace engineering students to experimental concepts including strain gauges and Wheatstone bridges, as well as mechanics of materials using tensile testing, basic truss structures, bending of I-beams, torsion of shafts, and bi-axial stress and strain.
Learning Outcomes1Master the basic methods in the experimental testing of solids and structures.
2Understand and set up experimental instrumentation.
3Set up and conduct mechanical tests on materials in tension and shear.
4Understand the concept of stress concentration in structures.
5Compute stresses, strains, deformation and displacements of basic structural components.
6Set up and conduct beam bending experiments.
7Master the basic skills in the writing of technical reports.
