Loads on aircraft. Strain, stress, and equations of equilibrium. Description of aircraft structures and materials. Torsion of shafts. Fuselage and wing structures. Symmetrical bending and stiffness analysis of solid and stringer-panel box beams. Structural failures.

Learning Outcomes

1Describe the material behavior of deformable bodies when subjected to loads.

2Create and use free-body diagrams to compute resultant support forces and moments.

3Compute internal force and moment distributions.

4Properly select and use materials based upon their mechanical properties.

5Compute stresses, strains, deformation and displacements of basic structural components.

6Predict structural integrity based on the calculations.

7Apply these ideas for analysis of components related to aerospace applications.
