An overview of structures, properties, processing, and applications of polymers, composites, laminates, biomaterials, green materials, nanomaterials, and pharmaceuticals commonly used in industry is presented. Problem solving skills are developed in the areas of material selection, evaluation, measurement, and testing.

Learning Outcomes

1Understand the structure and characteristics of major polymers, and related industry terminology.

2Conduct standard polymer material tests.

3Describe key design considerations for polymer process equipment components.

4Describe fibers, matrices, and fabrication techniques related to various composite materials.

5Identify green materials and green manufacturing strategies.

6Describe biomaterials and biomedical device manufacturing concepts.
