Metals, polymers, ceramic, and composite materials are studied. Crystal structure, molecular behavior, and the effects of various processes on material properties are considered. Course emphasizes the development and control of material properties to meet engineering requirements and specifications.

1Describe common materials and major manufacturing processes.

2Understand the process-property interaction for materials and manufacturing processes, including the major processes in strengthening materials.

3Describe methods for measuring material properties.

4Describe microstructure evolution of materials during casting, hot working, cold working, and heat treating processes.

5Use appropriate tools for materials design and selection.
