Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThe methods developed in statics, dynamics, and strength of materials are applied to the selection of basic machine components (gears, shafts, bearings, chain and belt drives, clutches and brakes, and motors).
Learning Outcomes1Analyze and design chain and belt drive systems.
2Analyze, design, and select appropriate gears for a machine.
3Identify motors that are appropriate to use in a machine with specific components and loading criteria.
4Analyze a machine to select rolling element bearings based on loading and life requirements.
5Design clutches and brakes that store and/or transfer rotational energy.
