Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionIntroduction to conservation biology, including population dynamics and genetic structure of rare organisms. Recovery planning, restoration ecology, environmental policy making, and sustainable developments are considered, as is ethics in conservation of biological diversity. Offered in odd-numbered years. Permission of instructor required.
Learning Outcomes1Read and interpret the scientific literature on conservation of natural resources with an awareness of the current status of what is known about biodiversity, endangered species and ecosystems, biological invasions, and the effects of climate change on natural communities.
2Explain how conservation research is carried out, and appreciate common pitfalls in designing research for goals of conservation interest.
3Consider and evaluate the balance between conservation goals and other priorities in land management, societal and economic goals, and socio-political systems.
