Fall 2025 Instructors:

A comprehensive overview of Modern art from Impressionism to Surrealism, designed to help students understand the radical transformations art and society underwent in that period, and reflect upon the influence of new technologies, scientific discoveries, and world events on artistic creation.

Learning Outcomes

1Recognize artworks, artists, and movements, list specific information that distinguishes them, and recall their major contributions.

2Identify and explain historical events, social forces, and cultural trends that have had an influence on these artworks, artists, and movements.

3Compare and contrast them by perceiving and reflecting on their differences and similarities.

4Interpret statements made about Modern art by contextualizing and analyzing and selecting artworks to illustrate your comments.

5Apply the knowledge acquired to analyze and write about artworks not studied in class.

6Develop analytical and writing skills through weekly writing exercises.
