An introduction to ceramic materials and processes used in creating wheelthrown and hand-formed pottery and sculpture. Emphasis on contemporary interpretations of traditional forms. Freshman and Sophomore students have priority.

Learning Outcomes

1Demonstrate the technical basics of using clay as a material for both sculptural and thrown work.

2Compare the applications of slips, stains, glazes, and wax resist in oxidation and reduction glazes and firings from Cone 04 to Cone 10 temperatures.

3Create ceramics and functional work using hand building and learn how to center and throw on the wheel with design intention.

4Apply skill in hand building figurative work with exact proportions.

5Demonstrate successful making of clay from dry chemicals and how to recycle clay using a clay mixer and pugmill.
