Fall 2025 Instructors:

A prior course in American or world history is recommended but not required. A survey of historical events that have shaped classical and modern sport, with a focus on recent history of American sport.

Learning Outcomes

1Examine the historical themes, factors, and particular events influencing the nature of sport within the larger context of United States history and culture.

2Describe how sport shaped aspects of American culture and identify the critical place of sport in the emergence of American culture.

3Investigate the ways gender, race, ethnicity, and class have influenced sporting experiences in the past and present, and determine the cultural and human diversity within sports in the United States.
