Students are introduced to aspects of individual and family life in diverse cultures, particularly racially and/or ethnically diverse families in the United States. The nature of relationships between dominant and minority cultures is considered. Implications of diversity for practice with diverse populations are emphasized throughout the course.

1Understand why and how individuals and families are diverse.

2Comprehensively explore and synthesize evidence about cultural values, family patterns, and historical experiences of major groups in the United States.

3Articulate an understanding of the nature of relationships between dominant and minority cultures and empathize with the issues of racism, prejudice, and discrimination.
