The students will study the contributions of the ancient Greeks and Romans to the development of animal doctors. The veterinary highpoint during the Byzantine Empire and Arabian medical and veterinary progress will also be studied. Animals in the Dark Ages, equine and canine medicine in Medieval Europe, and the Italian roots of the Renaissance in medical sciences will be studied. Particular attention will be paid to works of art that help demonstrate man's fascination with animals and their well-being. This course is appropriate for students with no previous study of history or art history. Typically offered Fall.
