Fall 2025 Lecture Laboratory Lower DivisionThis course is the first of a two-semester series that introduces fundamental biological concepts and prepares students for more specialized plant biology studies. Lectures and laboratory exercises will cover the topics of plant diversity, morphology, physiology, and ecology. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on how scientific data is collected and interpreted, and the lab component will perfect key observational skills in botany. Our goal is to provide essential foundational knowledge in plant biology for progression to upper-level courses.
Learning Outcomes1Know the major groups of land plants and describe the life cycles of each of these groups.
2Describe and identify the key features of a plant.
3Identify and describe the properties of life and levels of organization among living organisms.
4Explain how plants obtain and use resources, highlighting relationships between structure and function.
5Recognize the factors that influence the abundance and distribution of plants.
6Examine how environmental change impacts the physiology and ecology of plants.
7Practice qualitative and quantitative analytical and communications skills.
