This course focuses on using anthropology to address social issues. The course examines topics including: the history of anthropologists working in applied settings, the relationship between theory and practice, professional ethics, job opportunities, and skills needed as anthropological practitioners. Students should have some background in anthropology if coming from another discipline e.g. prior coursework or relevant experience as determined by instructor.

Learning Outcomes

1Identify key questions and concerns in applied anthropology.

2Speak about the relationship of anthropological theory and practice and how that relationship has been discussed in the discipline.

3Know about a series of anthropological practice areas and their progression over time.

4Analyze your own development as an anthropologist by doing career related research and self-reflexive writing in the course.
